Call for evidence to the Joint Committee on Human Rights in the United Kingdom.

[Last updated Thursday, June 14, 2007]

Inclusion International has recently submitted a call for evidence to the Joint Committee on Human Rights in the United Kingdom. This submission provides an international context for the issues of exclusion and marginalization faced by people with intellectual disabilities and their families worldwide. Our submission uses the findings from our recently completed Global Report: Hear Our Voices to reaffirm the voices of families and self-advocates whose knowledge about poverty and exclusion comes from first-hand experiences. The personal stories of our self-advocates are invaluable in the creation of real strategies geared at eliminating poverty and breaking the associated cycle of exclusion.

Our submission expresses how the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities reflects a new thinking domain in the area of disability as it links disability to both human rights and developmental strategies. However, one of the biggest challenges for people with intellectual disabilities and their families remains ensuring that the Convention is not only recognized within the community, but also provides a vehicle for transforming the community as well.

In the end, our submission reiterates how the Convention provides a tool to help achieve inclusive communities only if there is communication and cooperation between key players such as governments, civil society, and policy makers.
