Project to Promote Self-Advocacy and the UN Convention in Africa Approved

[Last updated Friday, May 25, 2007]

Inclusion International is extremely pleased to announce that a United States donor organization has approved an Inclusion International project designed to strengthen the capacity of self-advocates, families and governments in ten African countries to develop strategies to include people with intellectual disabilities in different aspects of community life. In partnership with national family based organizations this initiative will promote inclusive approaches to the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. By approaching the issue of inclusion by way of the voices of self-advocates, Inclusion International is confident that governments will be better able to develop inclusive approaches to the needs of all of its citizens. It is through our partnership with the Arc of the United States that this one-year initiative will be carried out.

Objectives:
This project has two broad objectives. Firstly, it aims to strengthen the capacity of African self-advocacy groups and family based organizations in contributing to the implementation of a Convention in their respective countries. Secondly, this project aims to create opportunities for governments to engage with self-advocates and families in different forums in order to build a better understanding of the barriers to the achievement of the human rights of people with intellectual disabilities and the role of the Convention in addressing these issues.

Activities:
The following activities will be actively pursued to equip leaders in ten national organizations with the necessary skills and information needed to participate and contribute to the implementation of the UN Convention in their countries.
a. The development of a guide and easy to read materials on the UN Convention
b. Training for self-advocates and families
c. Orientation sessions for governments
