8th AD HOC COMMITTEE MEETINGS IN NEW YORK, 14-25 August.

I am writing in anticipation of the upcoming 8th Ad Hoc Committee Meetings in New York to provide you with an update on the Convention negotiations to date and to highlight key issues for Inclusion International (II) in the final stages of the Convention negotiations

Throughout the Convention process II and its member organizations have focused their attention on key issues in the Convention that impact on the lives of people with intellectual disabilities and their families. At this session (which we hope will be the final session) we will focus on 3 critical issues that must be resolved if the rights of people with intellectual disabilities are to be advanced by this Convention (details included below):

1- Education: The word “environments must be removed and/or replaced in the article on education or people with intellectual disabilities will be at risk of systematic exclusion from regular schools.
2- Families: There must be a recognition in the Convention of the role that families play in advancing, facilitating and supporting people with intellectual disabilities.
3- Legal Capacity: the right to make decision and have support in decision making must be clearly established for all people

Other issues of importance for Inclusion International are: the rights of children with disabilities; international cooperation and monitoring. Please raise these issues with your governments and delegations participating in New York. We will post daily updates on the negotiations on our website and would welcome input to the discussions directly to our email address. info@inclusion-international.org
