Commission website in easy-to-read language: a victory for people with intellectual disabilities
[Last updated Friday, March 17, 2006]
Françoise Jan, the President of the Inclusion Europe, said: "We congratulate the Commission for this initiative. It shows that the European Commission is broadening its view on accessibility in order to include people with intellectual disabilities as well. We hope that this example of good practice will influence the Commission strategy to promote accessible information about the European institutions".
The new pages include an explanation of the EU's anti-discrimination Directives and people's rights and obligations under the legislation. This is the result of several years of work to promote the easy-to-read format. It is the objective of Inclusion Europe to offer basic information for people with intellectual disabilities. In recent years, Inclusion Europe has published a number of easy-to-read brochures, leaflets and training kits in many European languages. These concern among other issues the way the European Union is organised, important legislations or disabled people’s rights.
The new pages mark the first time that any website on "Europa" - the European Union web server - has been made available in easy-to-read format. The example that is given by the Commission is a very positive signal in favour of the integration of people with intellectual disabilities. Inclusion Europe will support the development of new accessible pages in 2006.
The accessible pages in English, French and German are available at www.eu.int/comm/antidiscrimination .
