Advanced Course on Negotiations of the International Convention on Disability

[Last updated Friday, January 27, 2006]

Course Introduction

After three years of work already done on the negotiations in the United Nations, those who been have been together from the beginning of the convention process have a common language and a certain knowledge that those who have just arrived are not familiar with. In addition, for many, the use and predominance of English within the meetings and in several texts creates an additional barrier.

This course provides a practical introduction to the fundamental concepts of international rights in the elaboration of a United Nations treaty as well as directions for the participants in the Convention on Disability process and the influence of nongovernmental organizations.

The proponed objectives of the advanced course on the Negotiations of the International Convention on Disabilities are the following:

- To understand the different mechanisms involved in the creation of international treaties;
- To be familiarized with the process and main contents corresponding to the Convention on Disability;
- To handle vocabulary specific to the process of the elaboration of a convention; and,
-To critically reflect on the participation of civil society in intergovernmental processes and the importance of a convention that protects the rights of people with disabilities.
