Regional Conference on Poverty and Disability in the MENA Region

Inclusion International of Middle East and North African countries is organizing a Regional Conference on Poverty and Disability in the Arab World The theme of the Workshop “The current condition of Poverty, Disability, and prevailing Social Policy” This is going to be a part of Inclusion International global initiative “Link Local Knowledge to Global Change”. Knowledge about Poverty and disability in MENA Region will incorporate the following topics: the existing Data on the impact of Poverty and disability, stories and experiences of individuals, families, and organizations about the relationship between Poverty and Disability and the social policy context.. The key references to the Arab people with disability in geographic areas of instability (Palestine, Iraq, Yemen, Sudan). Specific areas of discussion will include insecurity, displacement, manmade violence, occupation depression, and rehabilitation, family coping and adjustment, child and adolescent development. The outcomes of this Conference will brought to the World Congress of II which will be organized in Mexico 2006 . It will be the first stage towards “The Status Report on Poverty and Disability in the Meddle East & North African Countries – the Arab Region”. This study is the third of 4 regional studies in a three-year initiative by Inclusion International to draw global attention to the conditions of Poverty and their impact on the lives of people with disabilities and their families. The initiative is supposed to support people with disabilities, their families, associations networks to come together in each of the participating regions (Americas, Africa & the Indian Ocean, Europe and the Middle-East) to develop strategies to identify the causes of poverty and address those conditions. With the financial support of Norwegian Association for Persons with Developmental Disabilities NFU. Inclusion International is working with each of its regional associations to host a regional forum at which initial research findings will be used as a basis for developing strategies and implications for policy in different sectors. Over the three years of the project Inclusion International will develop a baseline global report on Poverty and Disability using the Inclusion International Millennium Development Goals as a framework to be released at its World Congress in Mexico in 2006. There will be two major sessions. 1- First Session Capacity and networking for parents organizations Dec. 7 & 8 2005 for organizations dealing with Intellectual Disability in the Region. Participants will be invited and fully sponsored by the organizers. They will attend the second session. 2- Second Session Dec 8-.9-10 Presentation and Discussion of country Papers .
