Inclusion International's President, Diane Richler, receives Order of Canada

Ottawa, Canada, Her Excellency the Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson, Governor General of Canada, has just announced the appointment of Diane Richler, President of Inclusion International to the Order of Canada, for her extraordinary contributions to advancing the human rights and inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities in Canada and internationally. The Order of Canada recognizes people who have made a difference to Canada. It is an extremely prestigious award, and is the country's highest honour for lifetime achievement.

In her announcement, the Governor General pointed to Diane's commitment and determination to get equality rights guarantees for people with a mental handicap in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, her work to close institutions in Canada. She cited Diane's efforts in raising national and international awareness of the issues facing people with intellectual disabilities. This is a wonderful and deserved accomplishment and an extremely important recognition of the goals and achievements of Inclusion International. On receiving news of the award Diane said, “This honour is a recognition of the value of our combined efforts on behalf of people with intellectual disabilities and I am honoured to represent the Inclusion movement in receiving the Order of Canada.”
